Our Sunshine Coast TESOL candidates started off today with a session on teaching listening, where they looked at the crucial elements of a successful listening lesson. The trainee teachers experienced a demo listening lesson which consisted of:
- A lead in – to set the context and raise interest
- Pre teaching vocabulary – to identify possible tricky pronunciation issues
- Setting the task – to suit the level of the learners
- Getting feedback – to consolidate the task and let learners know that they achieved the desired outcome
The interactive and practical nature of the demonstration helped to raise awareness of some of the listening sub-skills that students need to learn and practise, possible learner problems with listening and how to set up and deliver an effective listening lesson.
Here we see the trainees during the listening task stage of the lesson
